Playa del Carmen, Mexico

The town
Playa del Carmen is a marvellous place to spend a month. It has all the advantages of a Mexican Caribbean resort – a dazzling, white-sand beach, turquoise sea, a huge range of bars, restaurants and places to stay – and yet it has managed to retain a relaxed, low-rise village atmosphere which has nothing in common with the large-scale tourist resorts elsewhere on the coast. There is plenty to do and see in Playa and the town is growing fast. But the atmosphere is anything other than hectic and it is the gentle surf that seems to dominate the pace of life.

Getting there
There are direct flights from most major cities to Cancun International Airport which is just 60 km (40 miles) north of Playa. The journey from the airport to Playa by taxi should take less than 1 hour and cost around $35. Alternatively the school can arrange an airport meeting and transfer service on request.

Airport transfers
There are frequent bus services from Cancun airport to Playa del Carmen. However, we recommend that young students with no knowledge of Spanish take advantage of our airport meeting and transfer service on arrival.

Airport transfer fees (One way)
One person: 75 US$; two or more people: 60 US$ (per person).

The prices quoted are for transfers from 08.00 to 22.00 (arrival time at the airport). If you need a transfer before 8.00 or after 22.00, there is a 25% supplement on these prices.

Requests for an airport transfer must be made to training@bcn.ihes.com in good time.

Please note that we then need the flight arrival information at least 5 working days before arrival.

What's CELTA like? A CELTA course involves four quite intense weeks of work.

One thing most trainees seem to agree is that, while it's important to be fully committed to your course, it's also necessary to find time to relax...

Which is one reason why Playa del Carmen is a great choice for a CELTA course.

You can read more about other people's experiences on the course on our Barcelona CELTA course site.

Spanish courses You can also take a Spanish course at IH Riviera Maya

Note, however, that the CELTA course is an intense one. If you are going to take a Spanish course, we advise you to do so either before or after your CELTA course

Playa del Carmen
There are CELTA centres around the world but not too many where you can chill out at the end of the day in a setting like this one.

It's no wonder a user on Dave's ESL Cafe described Playa del Carmen as "probably the best place on Earth to get the CELTA...".
